August in Melbourne is peak winter, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing happening. In fact, this month is stacked with some of the best exhibitions the city has seen in years, the AFLW season kicks off, and there’s enough going on indoors to justify never checking the weather forecast. Here’s what’s worth your time this August.
Major Exhibitions
CARTIER — NGV International (until 4 October)
This is the headline exhibition for Melbourne’s winter. The NGV’s 2026 Winter Masterpieces is a world-exclusive Cartier exhibition featuring more than 300 jewels, tiaras, necklaces, brooches, timepieces, and design drawings. It’s the largest Cartier exhibition ever staged, and it’s only in Melbourne.
Even better, NGV Friday Nights are back every Friday until 2 October, combining late-night exhibition access with live music, film screenings, French-inspired food, and performances inspired by the world of Cartier. It’s one of the best winter nights out in Melbourne.
Where: NGV International, St Kilda Road
Tickets: Timed entry, book online. NGV Friday Nights are a separate (and excellent) experience.
ROME: Empire, Power, People — Melbourne Museum (until 25 October)
Over 150 objects from two of Italy’s leading museums, in Australia for the first time. This Melbourne-exclusive exhibition covers the rise and rule of the Roman Empire with artefacts you won’t see anywhere else in the country. If you have even a passing interest in history, this is worth the trip.
Where: Melbourne Museum, Carlton
The Vinyl Factory: Reverb — ACMI (until 31 August)
RISING and ACMI have brought this large-scale exhibition exploring how vinyl and music have shaped art, fashion, film, and social movements. If you’re into music culture, sound design, or just want to understand why vinyl never really died, this is your last chance. It closes at the end of August.
Where: ACMI, Federation Square
EMERGENCE[Y] — Science Gallery Melbourne (until 5 December)
A thought-provoking exhibition bringing together artists, researchers, and designers to examine how humanity might adapt to a rapidly changing planet. Heavy subject matter, but the kind of exhibition that stays with you.
Where: Science Gallery Melbourne, University of Melbourne
Colour — Scienceworks (until 26 January 2027)
A hands-on exhibition exploring the science behind how we see colour. Great for families, great for anyone who’s ever wondered why the sky is blue or how screens create millions of colours from just three.
Where: Scienceworks, Spotswood
Sport
AFLW Season 11 Kicks Off — August 9
The 2026 AFLW season begins on August 9 with all 18 clubs competing across a 12-round home-and-away season running through to late November. This is the first season under new naming rights, and it’s shaping up to be the biggest AFLW season yet.
Key early-season Melbourne matches include:
- St Kilda v Carlton — AFLW/AFL Double Header at Marvel Stadium (9 August)
- North Melbourne v Geelong — Double Header at Marvel Stadium (15 August)
- Collingwood v Fremantle — Victoria Park (23 August)
Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and club websites.
AFL — Finals Race Heats Up
August is when the AFL regular season gets serious. The run to September means every match matters, and the atmosphere at the MCG and Marvel Stadium lifts accordingly. Check afl.com.au for the full fixture.
Music & Arts
Caravan Sounds — Windsor (Chapel Street)
A custom-built caravan sound system with a professional DJ and curated playlists designed to keep the weekend energy going in the Chapel Street precinct. It’s a quirky, fun addition to the Windsor strip.
Choir of Hard Knocks: 20th Anniversary Concert — Palais Theatre
The Choir of Hard Knocks celebrates 20 years with a special concert at the Palais Theatre. If you remember the original documentary series, this is a genuinely moving event.
Metro Comic Con Melbourne 2026
Pop culture and comic convention for fans of comics, anime, cosplay, and everything adjacent. Check Eventbrite for tickets and details.
Food & Drink
NGV Friday Nights — Every Friday until October
Already mentioned above, but worth repeating as a food and drink event. French-inspired food, wine, and cocktails alongside the Cartier exhibition. It’s one of the best Friday night options in Melbourne right now.
Winter Warmers
August is prime season for Melbourne’s best winter comfort food. Pho on Victoria Street Richmond (see our guide), ramen in the CBD, mulled wine at rooftop bars, and long lunches in the Yarra Valley. If you haven’t done a wine region day trip this winter, now’s the time before spring hits. Check out our Best Day Trips from Melbourne for ideas.
Family-Friendly
School Holidays (Last Week of July into August)
Victorian school holidays wrap up in early August. If you’ve still got a few days to fill, here are the best bets:
- Colour at Scienceworks — hands-on, interactive, and kids love it
- Melbourne Museum — the ROME exhibition plus the permanent dinosaur gallery
- ACMI — free entry to the Story of the Moving Image exhibition, plus the Vinyl Factory
- Puffing Billy — the steam train runs daily and is magical in the misty winter hills (see our Dandenong Ranges guide)
Spartan Race — Werribee Racecourse (8-9 August)
The 2026 Melbourne Spartan Event is on at Werribee Racecourse. Obstacle races across various distances and difficulty levels. Not for the faint-hearted, but great to watch if you don’t fancy climbing over walls in the cold.
